Sort of corny--------but I loved it. I don't think I have ever read a Christmas novel before. I picked this book up because I needed a light quick book and I knew that Fannie Flagg would fill the bill. There are some wonderful characters in "A Redbird Christmas". Oswald Campbell is a divorced, recovered alcoholic who leaves Chicago for a warmer climate . In an effort to prolong his life he lands in a small Alabama town. This lovely friendly town is profiled almost as another character in the book. The reader will meet and get to know all of the towns people. Patsy is an abused, crippled, child who has been unwanted until she is more or less adopted by the town. Roy the local store keeper has saved a damaged Redbird and has made a beloved pet of the bird. This is the kind of book that builds and builds to the happy climax . And what a climax. It reminds me of the grand finale when everybody comes out to take a bow. Christmas morning is more than anybody could imagine. It will put a big smile on you face and a tear in your eye.Tags : A Redbird Christmas: A Novel [Fannie Flagg] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I have loved Fannie Flagg ever since I first saw her on Match Game 73. Little did anyone know that apparently goofy woman was a future author and screenwriter. It's hard for me to reconcile Ms. Flagg's TV persona with her author's voice. She cultivated a racy image back in the day, and her books are so darn wholesome, they're great for the whole family. When she writes dialogue, I can practically hear her read it. Bless her heart, she's given us a Christmas book to treasure, with just enough schmaltz to qualify for the genre, but not as predictable as many others. Everyone needs a Redbird Christmas!
Oswald Campbell is dying, and his doctor advises him to leave the harsh Chicago winter for a milder climate and hands Oswald an old brochure. Oswald takes the advice and heads to Lost River, Alabama. There follows a story of hurt, loss, and pain which give way to hope and healing.
I strongly recommend this book. You'll love the characters, and you'll become involved in the story of Jack the redbird, Patsy the crippled little girl, and those who love them.
This is a book that I treat myself with every Christmas. It is as comforting as a cup of hot cocoa on a blustery day. Well developed characters engage the reader early on and propel them speedily to the conclusion of the book. As always Fannie Flagg demonstrates her ability to make the reader laugh and cry at the same time. This is a book I willingly re-read and give copies to friends.
I read this adorable little book by New York Times best selling author, Fannie Flag, even though it wasn’t Christmas. It’s an enchanting story of faith and hope for all ages and all seasons! I just love a good crotchety old guy heartwarming story full of inspiration. It was beautifully written with a wonderful message of the magical life changing power of unconditional love. It’s sure to become a classic!
“[If] you want something really, really bad, and if it’s supposed to, it will happen.” —Fannie Flagg, A Redbird Christmas
“Isn’t it amazing how one little bird changed so many lives!” —Fannie Flagg, A Redbird Christmas
This is a sweet, sweet book. I have read it several times in the last couple of years and gave copies to my sister's for Christmas this year. I am approaching 74 years on the planet and have never felt so despairing about the condition of man. I have needed something that soothes my soul and this book has done that. I don't believe it is great literature, but it has some facets of having and unseen plan for your life working through your life - something that I see looking back over the long years of my life. It was affirming and hopeful. It doesn't have the edge of some of Fannie Flagg's books like Fried Green Tomatoes, but if you've read Can't Wait to Get to Heaven you have already seen some of the same spirit.
I absolutely loved this book! Love redbirds and loved the themes. Adored the little town on two sides of water. I know of a place like that and always felt like it was going down the river in a boat while riding through it in a car. The place has a rode on one side and a canal or river on the other. Loved the characters. Heart-touching, heart-warming, the best Christmas novel I've read this year! The characters are lovable, funny and eccentric. An ongoing feud with two different groups of people who live on opposite sides of the river is part of the tale. A man who lives in Chicago comes to Lost River for a few months because of lung issues. He expects to die soon and prepares to do so, but life isn't through with him yet and neither is God. Love Patsy and Frances, even Mildred and Julian. A host of great characters. Great description. You could visualize and smell the place. Loved all the birds, especially Jack. Cried. Loved the ending. A five-star read all the way! A little crippled redbird changes so many lives and even gets people back together again. BJ Robinson, Author of When the Snow Came and other books
Not much to say about Fannie Flagg except that she is an incredible writer. Of course everyone knows Fried Green Tomatoes, if not from the book which is glorious then from the movie but this book as well, although quite different, is magnificent. She weaves a fascinating tale all around a little wounded bird and you are involved and interested in the life of every person who in turn, is involved with this bird. The book is so filled with love and optimism and even when the characters begin sadly, so to speak, you know that the end will be happy.
Her remedy for happiness of course is to return to animals and nature. It is through this relationship, simple and moving, that one can find not only peace of mind but a "new you."
I love the way she writes, the people she writes about, her love of food and the way she intertwines those recipes with her literary skills and stories. I intend to read everything she ever wrote. What a talent. If you want to have a good feeling and a love of life, read Fannie Flagg.
