The Outside of a Horse Ginny Rorby Books
This is a fantastic book. Lots of issues here to discuss if read in a classroom. Horse racing and rather it is a humane activity for the horses. Disabilities due to war. horses used for therapy , Blended families are a few. there should be a lot of opportunity to follow up with speakers who own horses, esp. therapy horses, and veterans. Students could also research topics of their choice and share with class. Ginny Rorby has the ability to write a book that draws you into the characters lives. I would also recommend another book that she wrote called "Hurt, Go, Happy"Tags : Amazon.com: The Outside of a Horse (9780803734784): Ginny Rorby: Books,Ginny Rorby,The Outside of a Horse,Dial Books,0803734786,Animals - Horses,Family - Parents,Social Themes - General (see also headings under Family),Horsemanship;Therapeutic use;Fiction.,Horses;Fiction.,Horses;Juvenile fiction.,Children: Young Adult (Gr. 7-9),Fiction,Horsemanship,Horses,Juvenile Fiction Animals Horses,Juvenile Fiction Family Parents,Juvenile Fiction Social Themes Special Needs,Juvenile fiction,Therapeutic use,YOUNG ADULT FICTION,Young Adult Fiction Animals Horses,Young Adult Fiction Family Parents,Young Adult Fiction Social Themes General (see also headings under Family)
The Outside of a Horse Ginny Rorby Books Reviews
awesome book! you don't have to be a horselover to enjoy this book. for preteens on up...no sex. really an eyeopener...and hard to put down. I have giftyed this book several times!!
Delivered on time and a great story to read
This is by far the best book I have every read. I am not an avid reader and I read it in 2 days. I couldn't put it down. My son read the book first..he's 12 and he encouraged me to read it. This book inspired both of us to volunteer at a local horse rescue. We have now been volunteering for 3 months. If you are ready to be inspired to make a difference in this world, this is the book to do it. A beautiful story told with honesty and truth about both horses and people. Read it, be inspired, and find your place to make a difference!
Nice book for young girls (11-13). Talks about some parelli traning methods... surprised me. She loved the book, even though it is a tear jerker.
Known as the "Book Aunt," I am always scouting out books for a raft of nieces and nephews. A couple of years ago, Rorby's HURT GO HAPPY was a huge hit with three of them. Her latest, THE OUTSIDE OF A HORSE, is sure to be another.
Ginny Rorby is the natural world's best friend. Her earlier HURT GO HAPPY is the poignant story of a deaf child and a chimpanzee who communicate through sign language. This time, Rorby turns her attention to rescued horses, and their healing effect on a girl and her war-wrecked father.
Young readers (and their aunts)will be sucked right in to this moving novel. Hannah Gale's mother died five years ago. She lives with her harried stepmother now, while her father is half a world away in Iraq. To assuage the loneliness, Hannah begins visiting a nearby stable. She finds comfort in the company of horses and the women who work there.
When Jeff Gale returns from Iraq with a missing leg and recurring nightmares, the already precarious household starts to crack. Hannah again turns to her beloved horses for solace and tries to get her father to do the same. Some of the most touching scenes come in this highly charged section. The juxtaposition of human/animal suffering is beautifully rendered. But to say any more would give too much away. It's enough to know that it is an affective, well-paced ride to a satisfying conclusion. Kids will come away angry at the unnecessary cruelty to animals, and that's a very good thing.
Kudos to you, Ms. Rorby. I'm waiting not-so-patiently for the next one.
Rorby's newest book is a wonderful and gripping journey into the world of horses and the indomitable nature of the human spirit. Told in the first person by teenager Hannah Gale, this story realistically captures a girl's struggle to save her father while using her connection to horses as a life stabilizing force.
The Outside of a Horse is an emotional roller coaster of a book that stirs the heart, teaches valuable lessons about overcoming obstacles and shows how dedicated, creative action can indeed help solve problems. It is a tale that brilliantly demonstrates how our linkage to the world of animals has the capacity to heal and in the process, to make us more humane.
Such a lovely story of compassion and hope, not only for the animals that may need our help, but for our fellow humans as well. This book really gets into the heart of what it means to truly care, and about never giving up on anyone, no matter how difficult it is to hang on. I loved this story, as heart-wrenching as it was, and appreciate that it calls into question the way humans treat and use animals every day without even thinking about it. Hopefully we can start to change the way we think about animals (especially horses) as beings that only have a monetary value. At the end of the day, this is a quick but touching read.
